5Pioneer avhp4000 dvdJun 10, 2008
By J. R. Jack
I have had this unit for 3 weeks now, and I am very impressed with it. I moved up from a 7800mp, and I am so glad I did. The touchscreen is very responsive, and is visible in all lighting. The unit plays any format of music or video(even my ipod video podcasts).
Sound quality is awesome. The ipod control is very fast. The new ipod controller is a vast improvement from the one I had on my 7800mp. XM integration is nice. I recommend the GEX-20 so you get the 3 line display. I am considering adding on a rearview camera. The unit looks great in my Saturn Vue. I highly recommend this solid unit for it's price and functionality.

5LOVE IT! Bypass Safety lock-out instructions hereDec 16, 2008
By Charles F.
For the price, this is definitely one of the best non-nav DVD headunits out there. Pair this with the optional Bluetooth Adapter (CD-BTB200) and optional Ipod Adapter (CD-I200) and you have yourself a very complete system (minus Navigation).

For setting this up to view DVD's while driving (bypass safety lock-out), you'll need to get a standard 5-wire automotive relay and wire it up per these instructions:

1. connect "30" to the parking brake wire from the headunit
2. connect both "86" and "87" to ground
3. connect "85" to the remote turn-on wire from the headunit

What this does is send a pulse to the headunit to trick it into thinking you've turned on the parking brake. If you simply connect the parking brake wire to ground only, it will not work.

The DVD, CD, Radio, Ipod, and Bluetooth functionality on this headunit are all great! The touchscreen is very responsive too. One of the best features is the ability to change both the external buttons and the on-screen display (OSD) colors to match your factory interior gauge lighting. My 2008 Subaru STI comes with all red interior lighting so I selected the AVH-P4000DVD to have red buttons and red OSD.

PROS:
- Ipod controls w/ CD-I200 are amazing: mimics real Ipod controls on the screen (Except for scroll wheel), responsive, and charges Ipod while docked
- Bluetooth Module (CD-BTB200) works well as long as you update the software of your phone (I needed a software update on my Blackberry Pearl 8100 to get it to work properly)
- External Volume knob, very helpful
- Clear 6.5" screen, dims when headlights are on for night viewing
- Touchscreen very accurate and responsive
- External button and OSD screen colors can be customized to any interior (Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Violet) for factory look
- DVD playback is great
- Easy to use interface

Cons:
- only 2 pairs of preouts (front and rear/subwoofer)
- No navigation, but that is why its so cheap
- No remote control comes standard (optional CD-R55)

Just get it. You'll love it.

4Great ReceiverOct 24, 2008
By J. Gonzales
I put this unit in my 07 Dodge Ram. The sound is excellent. I originally put an after market Alpine in but I didn't like how it sounded. The Pioneer sounds so much better. The interface is easy to navigate. Not only does it play regular DVDs, it will play Divx movies right off writable DVDs. And it plays movies from your iPod. There's even an option screen that lets you change the video size for all your video playbacks. Radio stations come in nice and clear. Easy to see in the day time, very little glare...not completely gone, but hardly any to speak of at all. The Alpine receiver I had in there, was impossible to see about half the day.
The drawbacks to this receiver are pretty minimal.....the interface graphics aren't near as nice as the new receivers, but the price difference is significant. It has limited display color settings, but you're really putting it in to listen to, not to look at the buttons. It won't display album art from your iPod, but again, you can get that in the receivers that are twice the cost. Also, I wish it displayed radio information...station call letters and song title/artist's info. Some receivers do...in fact this same model number in the UK says it does have that feature...don't know why PIONEER USA dropped that. One complaint about the iPod control, you can't pick a letter to scroll through the artists names. You have to hold the arrow buttons, but you can go backward...that helps a little.
I paid just under $350 for mine. You can get better graphics and album art, but right now, you can't touch those features for under $700. This is a great receiver! (I like it so much, I'm considering buying another one for my wife's car.)

5Can't be beat for the price.Jul 15, 2008
By Ty Vernon
Where to start? A name brand (and good one at that) in-dash dvd player for under $400? I had a factory radio in an '05 Pathfinder and was tired of trying to find FM transmitters for my ipod, so I bit the bullet and took a chance on this with not many reviews at the time I got it. Well i really lucked out. This thing is great. Its customizable to go with your vehicle's lighting, it integrates seamlessly with ipods(note: you can even watch youtube videos on it with an ipod touch or iphone), dvd's look and play well (note: as the guy above said you can get around the video lock out whilst driving. You don't need a professional to do it though, just dig around on google a bit. Of course I would never do this and don't recommend it. I just ran across it while learning how to install it on my own). You can hook it up to extra monitors, hook in other devices, use bluetooth, setallite, or HD radio if you get the adapters. If you're like me and you have a Garmin and thus don't need navigation built in this is the perfect head unit.
